Prof. Bruce Stewart
Bruce Stewart is a Professor of Biology at Murray State College where he has taught for 25 years and has served terms as science division chair and department chair. He obtained a B.S. Ed. in Biology from East Central State College in 1974, an M.S. in Biology from Northeast Louisiana University in 1976, and reached the "all but dissertation" level in the zoology Ph.D. program at the University of Oklahoma. Stewart's special interest in teaching drug awareness came after his own battle with addiction cost him dearly in all areas of his life and reached a near-death climax in July 1996.
Professor Stewart survived with much aid and continued to teach school while driving from a halfway house, often with his dean. He began to teach about the neurophysiology of addiction in his life science courses, and later he was asked by the college administration to present drug awareness seminars to all incoming freshmen during new student orientation. He continues to teach about the devastating disease of addiction in appropriate class units and to other interested audiences.
Professor Stewart freely shares his own experiences to help provide insights into discoveries gained from biopsychology and neurophysiology of addiction. He has a wide range of other educational interests, including global education, science literacy and critical thinking. He is an avid teacher and is extremely grateful to have the opportunity to share his passions through teaching.
