Biography
Leslie Powell

Born in 1906 in Kansas, Leslie Powell came as a child with his family to Lawton, where he spent his youth.

Between 1923 and 1926, he studied art at the University of Oklahoma and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and later pursued BFA and MFA degrees at Columbia University.

Powell traveled widely, but spent most of his time in New York City, where he sought opportunities to show his work by participating in group exhibitions in East Coast galleries and museums.

Throughout his life, Leslie Powell maintained his ties with his native Lawton, often returning to paint in the Wichita Mountains.

Although he enjoyed a successful career as an artist, he is perhaps best remembered for his generous gifts to his community. He established a Municipal Fine Arts Collection in memory of his parents and created the Leslie Powell Foundation as ways of enriching the cultural life of his hometown area.
