Since majoring in art at Long Beach State University, I have gravitated towards realism in my painting, especially when working with new media.
As I become more comfortable with the materials, I often begin to simplify and abstract the images. The landscape began to appeal to me when I lived in Sitka, Alaska since it is exceptionally beautiful, interesting, serene, and peaceful not to mention there were endless possibilities for paintings. However, having lived in many different places I have always found some aspect of the present landscape to inspire me. I never felt the need to paint exotic scenes of places I have only visited briefly – I paint what I know. But I also love the intricate, often delicate look of foliage viewed up close. This subject appealed equally to my love of realism and abstraction.
My strategy relies on simplifying the complicated with flourishes of abstraction.I began my career painting in water colors which I found to be refreshing, clean and direct. I enjoy the spontaneity of the medium as well as the precision of which it is capable. But due to an unexpected career change and family responsibilities, I seldom found the time or energy to paint for several years.
When I began to paint again in 1993, I decided to try pastels. This was more for practical than esthetic reasons but I soon began to love the direction the new medium took me. As sort of a cross between drawing and painting, I rediscovered my love for drawing but was able to retain my love for color too. I have been influenced by my peers, by instructors, other artists, books and the opportunity to live in some places that were beautiful and inspirational.
